Think back to your first live music show. Possibly you pushed up against the stage in the dark with strangers or leaned against a wall as the bass thrummed through you. Maybe you sat in the sun-warmed grass hill beside a pavilion. Perhaps you danced amid laser beam lights in an arena’s narrow walkways. On the way home, you might have pictured what it would be like to be on stage or playing a role behind the scenes.
You may have followed the idea and started a band, joined theatre, or got involved with the performing arts. Imagine if there were an organization that not only supported that dream but gave you the chance to learn the ropes—from running sound and lights to stepping into the spotlight.
Empowering Young People Through Music
UK-based charity The Basement Door serves as the launchpad through which young people gain the hands-on knowledge to leap toward their goals. Explains Kev Westbury, Managing Director of The Basement Door, “We actually train young people in sound engineering, lighting, and stage setup and breakdown, giving them an insight into the industry.”
So far this year, 105 young volunteers have joined the charity’s training program. Many past performers have gone on to successful music careers, including Arlo Parks, who played her very first show at a Basement Door event, and The Molotovs, winners of The Basement Door’s 2019 Battle of the Bands.
Empowering Young People Through Music
Earlier this May, The Basement Door hosted its final show at Richmond’s Vineyard Community Center. “This was where The Basement Door began in 2008,” says Kev. “We started growing the charity here and now reach thousands of young people across the whole of London.”
After 17 years at the Center, saying goodbye was poignant, but in true rock-star style, the vibe was anything but subdued. It was a full-throated celebration of everything the charity has built—and a promise of what’s still to come.
A Printed Ticket Becomes a Keepsake
Digital tickets are efficient, but they lack heart. Shares Kev, “With everything electronic, we wanted to bring back the physical ticket so our guest could have something to remember the night. We used to do this years ago and were reminded recently how sentimental gig tickets are.” So, Kev chose a template, added his show’s details, and placed his order for custom printed event tickets from Eventgroove.
That night, the music was incredible, and everyone had an unforgettable time. Although the moment was bittersweet, “All guests were delighted to receive a souvenir ticket they could actually hold in their hands,” says Kev. “We also gave them to the performers and to our young staff volunteers as a memento of this gig in this particularly important venue. Seeing the reaction to receiving a physical ticket, we’re now contemplating ordering more for future gigs—just by having a ticket to see, hold, and put in a scrapbook or a story board on the wall.”
A Moment Worth Remembering
Kev described the Eventgroove online printing experience as smooth, fast, and affordable—but most importantly, the printed tickets gave everyone at the Vineyard show something personal to hold onto.
We’re honored to support The Basement Door and the incredible work they do for young people across London.
